A Day at St Saviour’s

The Pre-School Day

Each day at St Saviour’s is thoughtfully structured to provide a balance of learning, play, and nurture. The morning begins with free play in the main hall, where children can choose from a range of carefully planned, engaging activities. These are designed to support all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), including:

  • A cosy book corner
  • Sand and water play
  • Malleable materials
  • Construction and building sets
  • Role play in the home corner
  • Creative and craft activities

Children can also enjoy a healthy snack during the morning, with a choice of milk or water to drink.

We gather all the children together each day for circle time, where we welcome everyone and introduce the theme or topic of the week. There is also a daily focused activity with their key person in small groups of no more than eight. These sessions are tailored to the children’s needs and may include turn-taking games, early maths, storytelling, or language-rich experiences.

Children also benefit from dedicated time outdoors, where they can:

  • Explore ride-on toys
  • Climb, slide and balance on play equipment
  • Dig and plant in the garden
  • Cook up creations in the mud kitchen
  • Play ball games or engage in themed outdoor activities

Throughout the day, children are encouraged to take part in tidying up together, promoting responsibility and teamwork. We also share songs, stories, and quiet moments in smaller groups, creating a calm, nurturing rhythm to the day.

The Nursery Day

The day begins in the Rainbow Room, where older children (3–5 years) enjoy around 45 minutes of focused play designed to support areas such as early numeracy, literacy, communication, and mark-making.

Following this, the children come together for a short, purposeful session with their practitioner, focusing on areas such as language, mathematical thinking, or personal, social, and emotional development.

They then move to the main hall for snack and free choice play, where they can mix with the younger children—fostering friendships, empathy, and confidence across age groups.

The remainder of the day follows the core pre-school routine, including small group time with their key person and rich story sessions, all carefully designed to support their growing independence and readiness for school.
