We sometimes let the children climb up a slide. Yes that’s right – go UP a slide! But only when no one is waiting to come down. But why would we allow such a thing? Well, it’s all to do with the importance of this type of play.
Studies have shown that overprotecting children can harm their development and that experiencing controlled risk through play can better prepare them for real life risk. Going up the slide also stimulates the vestibular system, which includes fluid-filled parts of the ear that send messages to the brain. These messages have to do with motion, equilibrium, and spatial orientation. Along with vision, joints and muscles, the vestibular system plays a huge role in the human balance system.
It’s also wonderful to see the determination the children have to achieve this task – Oh and it’s also lots of fun!
